Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of therapy do you provide?

The foundation of my practice is simply learning to be with individuals and understand their experience through their eyes. I spent two semesters supervising other graduate students in these fundamental skills, and my appreciation for their value has only grown. Although I deeply value and use scientifically-supported therapeutic interventions, these interventions are often not helpful unless adapted to the unique circumstance of the individual.

In terms of specific treatments, I primarily draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, a well-researched and extremely adaptable treatment that falls within the cognitive-behavioral tradition. My specialty is trauma/PTSD and I have a separate site devoted to my trauma work. I’m experienced in prolonged exposure therapy, a treatment which helps people process trauma-related experiences and is the gold standard for treating posttraumatic stress disorder. I’m also trained in motivational interviewing, a well-established intervention for addictive behavior. Depending on your individual needs, I can provide both short-term (8-12 sessions or less) and long-term treatment.

How do I know if I need therapy?

Some people come to therapy with a diagnosable condition, but many do not. Some things to consider might be:  Are you experiencing distress that you’ve tried to deal with on your own without much success? Have you recently been faced with some new crisis or difficulty that you’d like help with? While there’s no simple answer, the fact that you’re reading this page right now suggests you’re thinking about making a positive change in your life, and I’d be honored to help facilitate that.
